Hall of Fame Signed 3 x 5 Collection with Wagner, Duffy, and Foxx (43)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,875
Extremely substantial collection of forty-three index cards (3 x 5 inches), or similar sized pieces, each individually signed by a Hall of Fame player, including many early and significant highlights, among them Hugh Duffy, Jimmy Foxx, and Honus Wagner. The Bill Klem signauture card is a government postcard (postmarked, and with short note from Klem). A total of forty-one different Hall of Fame players are represented here, including many whose careers ended before 1950 (Travis Jackson and Cal Hubbard are each represented twice). This collection of Hall of Fame signatures was compiled by a very dedicated old-time autograph collector and represent just a small portion of his substantial collection, the balance of which has also been consigned to this auction (presented in over thirty different lots). Unless otherwise noted, all of the signatures, scripted in a variety of inks, grade "9" or "10," and the cards are unlined and in Excellent condition or better (a few display either surface paper loss and/or paper/adhesive residue on the reverse from having once been mounted and then removed from an album). A number of these cards were originally mailed to the player for signing, and as such some display written instructions to the players, either on the front (signature side) or reverse. Some also feature biographical data on the reverse. The collection is comprised of the following signatures: Bender (cut signature affixed to card), Boggs, Bottomley (cut signature affixed to card), Cepeda (cut signature affixed to the card), Chylak, Combs, Crawford (lined, includes a short, comical note from Crawford in which he tells the recipient to "please desist" in asking for his autograph), Dean, Dickey, Duffy, Flick (dated "1960"), Foxx (small area of light soiling in the upper right corner), Frick (magazine photo of Frick affixed to card), Giles, Gomez, Greenberg, Hafey, Hartnett, Heilmann (cut signature affixed to card), Hooper, Hubbard (two examples, one has notebook hole punched in the top), T. Jackson (two examples), J. Johnson, Klem (Vg, government postcard postmarked 9/4/46, particularly interesting content to response along with signature as Klem's note includes his selections for the best hitters and pitchers he has seen), Landis (dated "Feb 5, '43"), Lombardi, Lopez, Larry MacPhail, Manush, McCarthy, McCovey, McGowan, Palmer (magazine photo of Palmer affixed to card), Ruffing, Sewell (Sewell has written a short note in addition to his signature), Sisler, Spahn (signing instructions on signature side), Traynor, Wagner (lined), Wheat, and Veeck. Total: 43 cards. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $5,875
