1910-1912 T215 Red Cross Tobacco (Type 1) SGC-Graded Collection Including Six HOFers and Two Newly Discovered Players (24)
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $9,400
Extremely substantial collection of twenty-four T215 (Type 1) Red Cross Tobacco cards, highlighted by six Hall of Famers including John McGraw and Joe Tinker, and two newly discovered examples which have never been seen and are not listed in the 2011 Standard Catalog checklist, each graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). This group is from one of vintage-card collecting's most extraordinary recent discoveries: The Louisiana Find of 2010 (comprised of just ninety-four cards, all rarities, including eight T207 Red Cross back cards). This collection of twenty-four represents over 20% of the subjects known to date in the T215 (Type 1) set plus two newly checklisted subjects. T215 Red Cross are one of tobacco-card collecting's most overlooked issues. Very similar in design and borrowing images from the T206 set, T215 Red Cross cards are believed to have been issued exclusively in the Louisiana area. This is an incredible group! The SGC grades are as follows: One VG/EX 50: Doolan (batting, there is only one Doolan listed in the Standard Catalog checklist and it does not indicate the pose, so we do not know if the batting pose or the fielding pose is the previously known subject). One VG 40: Crandall. Ten GOOD 30: Crawford (HOF), Dougherty, Doyle (port.), Elberfeld, Magee, Manning (newly discovered), Marquard (HOF, pitching), Paskert, Tinker (HOF, bat on), and Wheat (HOF). Seven FAIR 20: Doolan (fielding, there is only one Doolan listed in the Standard Catalog checklist and it does not indicate the pose, so we do not know if the batting pose or the fielding pose is the previously known subject), Hartsel, Hoblitzell, McGraw (HOF, glove at hip), Sheckard, Sweeney, and Wilson. Five POOR 10: Chance (HOF), Chase (holding trophy), Ford, Mowrey, and Wiltse (port.) This is a very impressive-looking and extremely substantial collection of twenty-four rare T215 (Type 1) cards, including six Hall of Famers and two newly discovered players, from The Louisiana Find. Total: 24 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++.
