1928 Washington Senators Signed Scorecard Collection with Cobb, Foxx, Speaker, Harris, Sisler (89 Signatures, 18 HOFers)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,350
Collection of six 1928 Washington Senators scorecards, each signed in pencil by numerous players, including Ty Cobb, Jimmie Foxx, Tris Speaker, and Bucky Harris. A total of eighty-nine signatures grace these scorecards, including eighteen belonging to Hall of Fame players (a number of players, including some of the Hall of Famers, are represented more than once). Among the notable non Hall of Fame signatures featured here are those of Moe Berg, Tom Zachary, Al Schacht, Nick Altrock, and Ed Kenna, whose entire Major League career consisted of just thirty-four games with the Senators in 1928. This incredible collection was just recently discovered by our consigner at the bottom of a box of old records he purchased at an estate sale and is therefore new to the hobby. Apparently, the agent overseeing the sale of the estate never bothered to look through the entire box and neither did our consignor until he returned home later that day. Each of these six fold-over scorecards (11 x 14 inches) dates from the 1928 season (determined by the names on the preprinted roster) and features the pencil signatures of players from both the Senators and their respective opponents. All of the scorecards have been signed on the interior and none are scored. Signatures range from "4" to "8," averaging "6." Four of the scorecards are completely detached at the spine (duly noted). Minor imperfections include small edge tears, light toning, creases, light fold lines, and very minor surface abrasions. In Very Good condition overall. 1) Washington vs. Philadelphia. Thirteen signatures: Cobb , Speaker , Simmons , Cochrane , Goslin , Dykes, Walberg, Barnes, Hayes, Zachary, Ruel, Hassler, and Hale. The scorecard is completely detached at the spine. 2) Washington vs Philadelphia. Twenty-two signatures: Cobb , Foxx , Speaker , Collins , Cochrane , Harris , Hauser, French, Dykes, Hale, Miller, Judge, Haas, Schacht, Boley, Jones, Walberg, Hassler, Lisenbee, Hadley, Marberry, and West. 3) Washington vs. Chicago. Fifteen signatures: Goslin , Rice (another player, whose name is illegible, has signed the program on top of Rice's signature; thereby obscuring much of the signature), Harris , Schalk , Berg , Clancy, Judge, Marberry, Tate, West, Schacht, Gaston, Barnes, Zachary, and one other (illegible). The scorecard is completely detached at the spine. 4) Washington vs. Cleveland. Nine signatures: Sisler , Burke, Gaston, Van Alstyne, Judge, Lisenbee, Tate, Burns, and Buckeye. 5) Washington vs. Boston. Sixteen signatures: Harris , Ruffing , Kenna, Ruel, Reeves, Tate, Brown, Judge, West, Hadley, Myer, Berry, MacFayden, Regan, Russell, and one other (illegible). The scorecard is completely detached at the spine. 6) Washington vs. Boston. Fourteen signatures: West, Reeves, Judge, Brown, Marberry, Altrock, Burke, Regan, Flagstead, Rogell, Morris, Todt, Harris, and one other (illegible). The scorecard is completely detached at the spine. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 6 programs. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $2,350
