Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Upper Deck Exquisite Dual Cuts Card "1/3"
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,994
In the early 1990s The Upper Deck Company began the practice of randomly inserting "signature" cards into packs of its regular cards for promotional purposes. The cards, all of which were limited in number, were unique because in addition to the standard player photo, they also incorporated a cut signature of the respective player within the design. The fact that they were card issues, and not simply cut signatures, is in part the reason they are so highly valued by collectors today, often at levels over and above the intrinsic value of the signatures themselves. Offered here is what is considered by most collectors to be among the most desirable "signature" cards ever issued by the company: a 2006 Exquisite Dual Cuts card featuring the signatures of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Ruth's signature, scripted in black fountain pen, appears on the front of the card and grades "9." Gehrig's signature, displayed on the reverse of the card, has been executed in pencil ("L. Gehrig") and grades "8." This is one of only three Ruth/Gehrig Exquisite Dual Cuts cards issued by the company as noted by the handwritten limitation number "1/3" on the front. The Ruth cut has been covered with a piece of clear tape which has toned over time. The Gehrig cut is irregularly shaped and displays a diagonal crease that touches upon the second "g" in "Gehrig." Accompanied by its COA card, bearing the unique hologram number "AAA01323." Nr-Mt/Mt. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,994
