1933 Who's Who in Major League Baseball Signed by Babe Ruth and Nine Other Hall of Famers!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,406

The 1933 hard-bound edition of Who's Who in Major League Baseball , compiled by Harold "Speed" Johnson and published by the Buxton Publishing Company of Chicago, Illinois, has long been hailed as one of the finest baseball books ever published. The large-format 542-page volume is notable for the fact that it features lengthy biographies and portrait images of every player in the league, as well as managers, coaches, umpires, former stars, and even sportswriters. Because of its substantial nature and format, it also became a favorite among autograph collectors, who found the pages to be the ideal venue for the signatures of their favorite players. Offered here is a 1933 Who's Who in Major League Baseball signed on the interior by twenty-seven different players, including ten Hall of Famers. The most significant signature in the book is that of Babe Ruth, whose blue fountain-pen signature (grading "9") appears directly below his portrait image. Additional signatures in the book, all but one of which are scripted in either blue or black fountain pen on the player's respective biography page, are those of Mickey Cochrane (personalized "To Johnny"), Kiki Cuyler, Charlie Gehringer, Goose Goslin, Hank Greenberg, Gabby Hartnett (pencil), Red Ruffing, Bill McGowan (umpire) Tommy Bridges, Frank Crosetti, Carl Fischer, Pete Fox, Clyde Manion, Fred Marberry, Marvin Owen, Bill Rogell, Heinie Schuble, Fred Schulte, Vic Sorrell, Jerry Walker, JoJo White, Brick Owen (umpire), and Harry Salsinger (writer). Additionally, the signatures of Clyde Manion, Harry Heilmann, Tuck Stainback, and Red Corriden, appear on the interior front cover. (Manion has signed the book twice, once on the interior cover and again on his biography page.) All of the signatures are boldly penned, grading "9" or "10." The book (9 x 11.25 inches) displays heavy wear, including stains and abrasions to both covers, complete separation along the spine, and a number of loose pages. In Good condition overall. Despite the less-than-ideal condition of the exterior, the interior pages and signatures themselves have naturally been protected from the elements in the confines of the volume. All of the respective signature pages are in Excellent condition and have not been affected by the mainly exterior flaws. The original dust jacket, which is rare, is not included here. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,406
