1946 Babe Ruth Signed Check
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,938
Babe Ruth personal check, dated June 18, 1946, and signed "G. H. Ruth" along the bottom border. Ruth's signature is flawlessly rendered in black fountain pen and grades a perfect "10." The check, drawn on The Chase National Bank of the City of New York, is made out to "Saks Fifth Avenue" in the amount of $51.46 (not in Ruth's hand). Ruth's name is preprinted along the left margin. Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find. This is a choice example with the signature completely untouched by the normal bank cancellation marks and stamps. Checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that the signatures on checks are almost always very well executed. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes, a single, light vertical crease in the center, a staple hole, and a small ink stain in the upper border. In Excellent condition overall. Matted and framed together with a recent print of Ruth (8 x 10 inches) to total dimensions of 15.25 x 21 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $2,938
