Vintage Hall of Fame Signature Collection with Ty Cobb and Cy Young (6)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,998
Collection of six vintage Hall of Fame signatures, penned on a variety of items, each rendered by a player who is long since deceased. 1) Ty Cobb. Undated on Cobb's personal stationery. Cobb has personalized the sheet to longtime collector Ron Menchine in his customary green ink: "To Ronald Menchine/from/Ty Cobb." Both the inscription and signature are flawlessly rendered, grading "10." 7 x 3.75 inches. Ex, with a few light creases. 2) Cy Young. Undated on the reverse of a Cy Young real-photo postcard. The postcard, which pictures Young in street clothes very late in his life, bears a white facsimile signature on the front. Young has signed the card on the reverse in blue ink ("9"). These cards were produced for Young precisely for the purpose of responding to autograph fans. The card has never been addressed or mailed and is slightly toned on the reverse. 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Ex. 3) Frank Baker. Baker has signed his name in blue ink ("10") on the cover of the "Eighth Annual 1961 'Tops in Sports' Banquet" program. The twenty-page program, issued by the Maryland Professional Baseball Players Association, features numerous photos of the banquet's honorees, including Roger Maris, Warren Spahn, and Brooks Robinson. Baker is listed on one of the interior pages as an "Honored Guest." 8.5 x 11 inches. Ex. 4) Clark Griffith. Undated photograph, inscribed in black fountain pen ("10") along the bottom white border, "To Edward Barry/Clark Griffith." A facsimile signature of Griffith appears on the photo. The reverse features the photographer's credit, "RDM Studio/847 Belmont Ave. Chicago," as well Griffith's name written in blue ink and the pencil notation "June 1944." 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Vg-Ex, with a tiny ink spot on the front (near the left border) and a light crease running through his image. 5) Lou Boudreau. Promotional photo of Lou Boudreau and his broadcast partner Jack Quinlan; signed by each in blue ink ("9") next to his respective image. Boudreau and Quinlan broadcast Cubs games on the radio for WGN in Chicago between the years 1957 and 1964. 3.5 x 5 inches. Vg, with a number of light creases (most can only be seen when viewed at certain angles). 6) Max Carey. 1961 signed postcard. Carey's typewritten response to a fan letter has been signed in blue ink ("10"). He has also added the written notation "No pix as of now, sorry." The postcard is addressed and mailed, bearing a 1961 postmark. 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Vg-Ex, with a price notation of "$20.00" written in pencil on the front and the purple-marker notation "Autograph Max Carey" written on the reverse. From the Ron Menchine Collection.
