1962 Mickey Mantle Signed Safe at Home Lobby Card
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,058
Classic 1962 Safe at Home lobby card signed by Mickey Mantle. Following the historic 1961 season, many commercial opportunities opened up for the famed "M&M Boys," one of which was the feature film Safe at Home , in which they played themselves. Mantle and Maris often joked about this film (and they were not alone, it was universally panned by critics), but always enjoyed signing lobby cards for the few who thought to pursue them for this purpose. The lobby cards themselves are scarce, so few collectors had both the inclination and opportunity to get examples signed. Today cards signed by either one or both of the players are highly prized by collectors when they surface. The offered card is one of the most desirable from the eight-card set as it pictures both Mantle and Maris, along with their young costar Bryan Russell and William Frawley, who played the team's manager in the film. Mantle has signed the card "Mickey Mantle No. 7" in blue Sharpie (grading "9/10") atop his image. The card (14 x 11 inches ) displays a tiny tack hole in each corner, and a few extremely minor edge chips (from tacks) that are of no consequence. There is also a six-inch remnant of mounting tape along the reverse top border from a prior framing. Aside from the very minor flaws, all of which are common to lobby cards and have no impact on display value, the card displays an overall Excellent to Mint appearance and is perfect for display, as intended. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,058
