Reggie Jackson Signed Check Collection (100)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,819
This enormous collection of 100 signed Reggie Jackson personal checks originates directly from Reggie Jackson and is the largest such offering we can recall at auction. All of the checks date from 1991, with the exception of one (1992), and each is flawlessly signed (grading "10"), in a variety of inks, "Reggie M. Jackson." Jackson's name and address are printed in the upper left corner of each check. None of the checks are baseball related. Instead, most relate to his car collecting hobby, as there are numerous checks made out for auto supplies, parts, DMV registrations, and auto repairs. Twenty-nine of the checks display a single vertical fold, while four others have two or more vertical folds. Two of the checks are slightly torn (paper loss) along the top border. All display normal bank cancellation stamps on the front and/or back. Without regard to the aforementioned folds and tears, the group grades Nr-Mt overall, with just a small number grading slightly lesser. It should be noted that the "book" value of this lot, according to current SMR values, is $60,000. (Note: the $600 SMR list price per check is no doubt related to the almost total lack of Reggie Jackson checks on the market, and the increased supply represented by this group alone could impact the list price in the future. Many years ago much greater quantities of Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth checks, sold directly by their families, temporarily affected check prices for those legends. This is the nature of checks.) This is an unprecedented offering of Reggie Jackson checks and one that potentially offers outstanding "break" value down the line. In addition to being a legendary Hall of Famer, a member of the "500 Home Run Club" and one of the most respected all-time greats of the game, Reggie Jackson is also a collector himself and a longtime supporter of the hobby. This substantial lot was personally provided by Reggie Jackson as a courtesy per our request via his agent. Total: 100 checks. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,819
