500 Home Run Club Signed Baseball - Eighteen of the Possible Twenty-Five Signatures!
Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $2,644
Official American League (Brown) baseball signed in either blue or black ink by eighteen of the twenty-five members of baseball's legendary 500 Home Run Club. This is a remarkable 500 Home Run Club ball in that it lacks only the signatures of Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr., Gary Sheffield, and Mark McGwire for modern-day completeness. (Ruth, Foxx, and Ott, the first three players to reach the 500 home run plateau, passed away long before such theme balls were in vogue among collectors.) The signatures present here are those of Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams (sweet spot), Hank Aaron (sweet spot), Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Manny Ramirez, Rafael Palmeiro, Reggie Jackson, Jim Thome, Frank Robinson, Eddie Mathews, Mike Schmidt, Frank Thomas, Alex Rodriguez, Ernie Banks, Harmon Killebrew, Willie McCovey, and Sammy Sosa. All of the signatures are scripted in blue ink and grade either "9" or "10" with the exception of Murray ("6"), Rodriguez ("6"), and Ramirez ("5"). There is a very small area of light toning on a side panel touching upon the McCovey signature, otherwise the ball is in Near Mint condition. This is an outstanding 500 Home Run Club ball and one that with some effort could certainly be completed by a dedicated collector. It should be noted that in our May 2010 auction, Robert Edward Auctions offered a 500 Home Run Club ball with a remarkable twenty-one of the possible twenty-five signatures (missing only Bonds) that realized a final sales price of $9,988 (Lot 1129). Given that result, and the enormous significance and extreme rarity of a fully signed example (we've never seen one), the quest to obtain the final four signatures on this ball (and there is plenty of room to add additional signatures) could prove to be a wise investment in time and resources for the winning bidder. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $800. Estimate (Open). SOLD FOR $2,644
