Exceptional Nineteenth-Century Baseball Pocket Watch

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,998

Circa 1880s pocket watch featuring a colorful baseball vignette on the facing. The scene pictures a batter and catcher, in period garb, with a flagpole and section of the grandstand forming the backdrop. This is an very attractive and colorful baseball-theme pocket watch, and one of the very few styles dating from this early era. Items such as this truly reflect how popular the game of baseball had become during the late 1900s, a time in which baseball motifs began appearing in all forms of decorative art, jewelry, and popular fashion. This particular piece is not only of exceptional design and quality, it is very rare and represents only the second example we have ever seen. The watch (1.75 inches in diameter) displays moderate wear, including scratches to the glass and tarnishing to the metal backing and sides. The original hanging clasp is missing. While not in working order, it could certainly be repaired by a qualified jeweler if desired, and is exceptional for display as is. No manufacturer listed. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,998
