1939 Hall of Fame Dedication Collection (3)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,115

The 1939 Baseball Centennial, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the "birth" of baseball, was a year-long celebration highlighted by the dedication of the Baseball Hall of Fame on June 12th. Offered here is a collection of three exceedingly rare souvenirs issued on that historic day. 1) Original 1939 Hall of Fame yearbook. This seldom-seen soft-cover booklet further promotes the Abner Doubleday myth by featuring a biography of baseball's supposed inventor as well as an explanatory article on the "Doubleday Field and the Origin of Baseball." Additional pages are devoted to photos of the newly opened Hall of Fame and the town of Cooperstown, as well as photo reproductions of the Hall of Fame plaques for fourteen of the first nineteen inductees (as noted on the interior rear cover, the yearbook was printed prior to the completion of the bronze plaques for Alexander Cartwright, Henry Chadwick, George Sisler, Eddie Collins, and Willie Keeler). The twenty-four page booklet (9 x 6 inches) displays a very light circular stain on the back cover (probably from being used as a coaster for a glass) and a light diagonal crease in the upper right corner that affects both covers and all of the pages. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall, with all of the pages clean and bright. 2) Ticket stub for the "Cavalcade of Baseball" dedication ceremonies held at Doubleday Field on June 12, 1939. The ticket pictures an illustration of both the Hall of Fame building and Abner Doubleday and makes note that the ceremony will take place "Rain or Shine." The ticket stub (5.5 x 2.75 inches) displays an area of surface paper loss along the right border on the reverse; it is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. 3) Hall of Fame first-day cover, displaying the Centennial of Baseball logo, postmarked June 12, 1939. The envelope (6.5 x 3.75 inches) bears a three-cent Centennial of Baseball stamp and has been addressed. In Very Good condition, with a small, circular stain just below the postmark. This is a rare and substantial collection of significant items relating to the 1939 Baseball Centennial celebration, which we have found has become an increasingly popular area of collecting interest. Total: 3 items (yearbook, ticket stub, and first-day cover). Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,115
