Circa 1961 Mickey Mantle Signed "Pitch to Mickey Mantle" Game
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,938
Exceedingly rare and outstanding Mickey Mantle endorsed game, beautifully signed by Mantle in blue Sharpie (grading "10") on the front. Extremely impressive for display! Reminiscent at a glance of the classic late 1950s Mickey Mantle "4 Bagger" game by Gardiner, this game dates from several years later (circa 1961) and is considerably rarer. In fact, this is the first example of this rarity (autographed or unautographed) we have ever seen! The colorful game board, printed on thick cardboard stock, features a photo of Mantle in a batting pose and is titled "Pitch to Mickey Mantle." The caption next to Mantle identifies him as "World's Famous N.Y. Yankee," while the lettering below informs consumers that the game is suitable "For Indoor or Outdoor Sport." Produced by George E. Mousley, Inc., West Warwick, R. I. This was a game of hand-eye coordination whereby kids would attempt to throw a ball or beanbag through the hole labeled "Home Run," while avoiding the the other three holes labeled, respectively, "Strike Out," Double Play," and "Side Retired." This game has a particularly attractive, exciting, and colorful design picturing Mantle at bat in uniform. The bat is lettered "Mickey Mantle Special Slugger." The rarity of this game is such that even the famed Barry Halper Collection did not include one in its vast inventory of Mantle memorabilia. The board (15 x 19 inches) displays a number of moderate surface creases and/or tears, mainly around the areas of the holes, which are no doubt the result of its former use. Despite the minor flaws, all of the colors remain bright and vibrant, and the game projects an outstanding overall Excellent appearance. Magnificently and very expensively matted and framed to total dimensions of 28 x 33 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,938
