Original Fenway Park Seat Signed by Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski and Many Other Red Sox Players
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,233
In addition to its inherent vintage charm, this original Fenway Park seat also has the distinction of featuring the signatures of eight former Red Sox players, each of which has been rendered in silver paint pen. The most notable signature here is that of Ted Williams, which as been beautifully scripted (grading "10") on the middle slat of the backrest. Joining Williams' signature on the backrest, are those of Roger Clemens (top slat) and Carl Yastrzemski (bottom slat). The remaining five signatures all appear on the top portion of the seat: Wade Boggs, Fred Lynn, Jim Rice, Carlton Fisk, and Mo Vaughn. Both Boggs and Vaughn have also signed their names on the bottom portion of the seat as well. All of the signatures are finely rendered and grade "10" with the exception of the Vaughn signature on the bottom portion of the seat ("6," smudging). Fenway Park holds the honor of being baseball's oldest Major League park. Constructed in 1912, it has been home to the Boston Red Sox for the past ninety-nine years and is the site of baseball's most famous edifice, the fabled "Green Monster" wall in left field. It has been said that Fenway is a place "where you can sit for hours and feel a security that does not exist anywhere else in the world." If so, than this seat may bring a small ounce of comfort to any diehard Red Sox fan longing for the confines of Fenway's hallowed grounds on a cold winter night. The seat, which bears the number "1" stenciled in white on the back, has been painted blue; however, much of the paint has peeled off the metal components, revealing its undercoat of red. It is possible that the wooden slats composing the backrest are replacement pieces, but the seat components and all the metal framework appear original. Replacement bolts and nuts are used throughout and the seat has been attached, by means of screws, to a wooden platform that allows it to stand freely.
