2008 Johan Santana New York Mets Signed Game-Used Alternate Jersey with Team and MLB Provenance

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,175

New York Mets white alternate jersey worn by two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana during the club's first three home games of the 2008 season against the Philadelphia Phillies. This jersey was obtained directly from the New York Mets and its game-used status is fully attested to by both the club (in the form of an official LOA) and Major League Baseball (in the form of an authentication hologram affixed to the jersey). The accompanying LOA from the Mets makes note of the official MLB hologram number ("BB897410") and reads in part: "This game used jersey was worn by Johan Santana from April 8th to 10th, 2008 against the Philadelphia Phillies and authenticated after the game on the 10th by a representative from the official Representative of Major League Baseball." The white knit jersey is lettered "Mets" across the front and features the number "57" on both the left breast and reverse. "Santana" is lettered on the reverse above the number. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in tricolor tackle twill (blue, orange, and black). A Mets team patch appears on the left sleeve, while the right sleeve features a Shea Stadium commemorative patch (2008 was the Mets' last season of play at Shea). Located on the interior left front tail are a "Majestic" label, which includes the size ("50"), and two flag tags, reading, respectively, "Taper" and "+2 inch Slv." Inscribed "Johan Santana 57" in blue Sharpie (grading "10") on the right breast. Original and unaltered, the jersey displays light wear, including light soiling along the collar area, two tiny stains on the reverse, and modest soil stains on the left shoulder and left breast. According to our research, Santana did not make any mound appearances during the club's first three games of its initial nine-game home stand in 2008. Although he did not pitch in the series, this jersey was worn by Santana during the Mets forty-fifth and final home opener at Shea Stadium and, as such, represents a historic Mets jersey from the club's final season at Shea. 2008 also marked Santana's first season with the Mets. Acquired in a trade from the Minnesota Twins during the off-season, Santana immediately stepped into the role of "ace" of the staff. The two-time former Cy Young Award winner led all Mets starting pitchers in victories (16), ERA (2.53), innings pitched (234.1), shutouts (2), and strikeouts (206). Considered one of the top left-handed pitchers in baseball, Santana has won 133 games in eleven seasons and his .685 winning percentage ranks eighteenth on the all-time list. This is the first Santana jersey we have ever offered and, given its provenance, a highly significant example dating from his first season in New York. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,175
