2002-2008 Derek Jeter Pro-Model Bat

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,880

Black Louisville Slugger Derek Jeter signature-model "P72" bat dating from the 2002-2008 manufacturing period. Strictly in terms of use, this is one of the finest Derek Jeter bats imaginable. A plethora of heavy ball marks appear on all sides of the barrel, as do numerous deeply embedded stitch marks. Minor deadwood and grain separation are apparent on the reverse of the barrel. A thick application of Mota Stick has been applied to the handle, which displays a large twelve-inch crack. Additionally, some of the black lacquer finish has begun to peel in several small areas. Given the tremendous amount of use displayed here, it seems obvious that Jeter had a particular fondness for this piece of lumber and it probably served him well for a considerable period of time. Few Yankee players have made such an impact upon their arrival as did Jeter in 1996. Jeter seemed to be the missing piece to the Yankees play-off puzzle and his Rookie of the Year performance that season helped lead the "Bronx Bombers" to their first World Championship in eighteen years. Since Jeter's debut, the Yankees have won seven pennants and five World Championships, not to mention eleven Division titles. Like Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle before him, Jeter personifies the current Yankees dynasty and it seems assured that one day his plaque will hang both in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park and Cooperstown. Graded A6 by MEARS (base grade of 5, plus 3 points for use, but minus 1 point for the handle crack and another point for the slight peeling to the finish). While we do not mean to take issue with MEARS' grading system, this is certainly a case where the grade alone does not do justice to the bat. While the flaws cited by MEARS have taken points away from the bat's technical MEARS grade, in our opinion these very flaws are positive traits, in that they are the sole result of extended use. This is an incredible bat, and one that many (if not all) would find more desirable than a higher-graded example without flaws resulting from extended use. This is a phenomenal Jeter bat in all respects and one that is far superior to what might be suggested by its technical grade. LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,880
