1912 New York Giants vs Boston Red Sox World Series Panorama
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,880
This extraordinary panoramic photograph captures the action between the New York Giants and Boston Red Sox at the Polo Grounds during the 1912 World Series. Distinguished by its exceptional clarity, the photo, taken from the perspective of the center-field bleachers, encompasses the entire playing field and grandstand, most of the bleachers, and much of the outlying area, including Coogan's Bluff, where hundreds of fans can be seen watching the game. The photographer's credit, which reads "The Pictorial News Co., New York," appears in the lower left corner. The photo's World Series attribution is based upon the vintage handwritten notations scripted upon a piece of white tape affixed to the base of the frame: "Polo Grounds New York/The Giants versus Boston Red Sox World Series 1912/The Giants in the field." (It should be noted that a 1912 World Series panoramic postcard from Game 1, which also appears in this auction, features nearly the identical image seen here, further supporting its 1912 World Series attribution.) Panoramic photos of Major League games in progress are exceedingly rare, especially those capturing World Series action. We can only recall having seen a few others predating this piece, but in terms of aesthetic appeal, this photo has few equals. All of the players are clearly visible, including center fielder Fred Snodgrass, who's famed "muff" in the final game helped give Boston the Series victory. Adding to the charm of the piece is that many of the outfield signs and advertisements are easily readable, including the Bull Durham sign in right field. Boston defeated the Giants in eight games (one game ended in a tie) in what is regarded by many as one of the most exciting and eventful World Series ever played. Except for a one-sided 11-4 victory by the Giants in Game 7, all of the games were closely contested, with four of the games decided by one run. The final game was decided in ten innings, when the Red Sox rallied for two runs in the bottom of the frame against Christy Mathewson to take home the championship. The photo (30 x 9 inches) displays a number of very light creases (most visible when viewed at certain angles), minor rippling, and a few small, light surface abrasions in the center of the piece. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $1,880
