1921 Washington Senators Team Panorama

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,763

Striking panoramic photo, displaying exceptional clarity, capturing the 1921 Washington Senators. Twenty-seven team members are pictured here posing shoulder to shoulder in front of the grandstand at Washington's Griffith Stadium, including Walter Johnson, Sam Rice, Bucky Harris, Al Schacht, George Mogridge, Tom Zachary, Bing Miller, Val Picinich, Joe Judge, and manager George McBride. One of the more endearing aspects of this photo is the fact that Nick Altrock, one of baseball's famed clown princes, is pictured twice. Altrock, who is seen on the far left, decided to take advantage of the slow process in which such photos were produced by running around the photographer as the camera panned to the right so that he could also be seen standing (and smiling) on the far right in the finished photo. The white-lettered caption along the base reads "The Washington Base Ball Team, Season of 1921." The photographer's credit, "Schultz," appears in the lower right corner. The photo (34 x 7 inches) displays a number of tiny tears along the top border (all of which can easily be matted out), as well as a light, approximate thirteen-inch horizontal crease in the center of the photo extending from the left border. A very small circular abrasion affects the player pictured sixth from the left. All of the aforementioned flaws are minor in nature and do not significantly detract from the photo's display value and exceptional overall Excellent appearance. This is an outstanding team photo dating from the "golden age" of baseball panoramic photography. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,763
