New York Yankees Large-Format Photograph Collection (4)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $588

Each of these large-format photos enjoys the special provenance of having once been displayed within the original Yankee Stadium. Ideally, they were obtained directly by our consignor, a longtime collector, at a special auction of Yankee Stadium material held, of all places, at a Little League field in Queens, N.Y., in 1975. (Yankee Stadium was undergoing an extensive renovation at the time, and nearly all of the items housed in the original stadium were either sold or discarded at the time.) He recalled that numerous items were offered that day at the outdoor sale, including turnstiles, light fixtures, etc., but it was nothing like the most recent Steiner Sports liquidation of Yankee Stadium memorabilia. Instead it was attended by a small number of local collectors and he remembers that most of the photographic display pieces were simply lined up against a fence with price tags on them. (A special presentation photo of Nat Fein's "The Babe Bows Out," which appears as a separate lot in this auction, was purchased by our consignor at that same sale.) All of the photos here are housed in what appear to be their original wood frames. 1) 20 x 16-inch photo picturing Lou Gehrig (smoking a pipe), Joe McCarthy, and Grover Whalen (president of the New York World Fair Corporation and the official greeter of New York City) together at a special luncheon for the New York Yankees held on the grounds of the New York World's Fair. The printed caption below the photo reads "New York World's Fair/Luncheon To New York Yankees Oct. 3, 1938." McCarthy, Whalen, and Gehrig are each identified in print directly below their respective images. A large team photo of the New York Yankees bearing the heading "Thrice Welcome/Thrice Champions" appears in the background. This luncheon, which was held the day after the end of the 1938 season, was held in honor of the Yankees winning their third consecutive pennant. Just six days later, on October 9th, the Yankees would be crowned World Champions for the third consecutive time after sweeping the Cubs in the World Series. The photo displays two small areas of surface paper loss along the right border and right corner as a result of the paper adhering to the glass. Light surface wear, including a few light surface abrasions. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall with tremendous clarity. Framed to total dimensions of 20.75 x 16.75 inches. This is an outstanding large-format display photo and the prize of the lot. 2) 20 x 16-inch photo picturing the dedication of Jacob Ruppert's memorial plaque at Yankee Stadium in 1940. The photographer's credit, "Cosmo-Sile," appears in the lower right. Seven individuals are pictured at the dedication, including Yankees manager Joe McCarthy, mayor Fiorella LaGuardia, and Washington Senators manager Bucky Harris. Ruppert's plaque was dedicated on April 19, 1940, at the Yankees home opener against Washington and was the second memorial plaque ever erected on the centerfield wall (Miller Huggins was the first individual so honored, in 1932). Ruppert purchased the Yankees in 1915 and during his twenty-five-year tenure the club won eleven pennants and eight World Championships. The photo displays minor rippling and adhesive residue along the white borders. Excellent condition overall with exceptional clarity. Framed to total dimensions of 21 x 17 inches. 3) Large 16 x 13-inch photograph of Babe Ruth in extreme close-up. Ruth is pictured in uniform from the shoulders up, flashing his irrepressible smile. In apparent Excellent condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 21.25 x 18.25 inches. 4) 18.5 x 9-inch photo depicting the guests at the Yankees victory dinner held at the Hotel Commodore on October 9, 1936, as noted by the printed notations in the lower right corner. The photographer's credit, "Empire Photographers," appears in the lower left. The photo captures hundreds of individual diners celebrating the Yankees third consecutive World Championship, which took place earlier that day at Yankee Stadium following the club's four-game sweep over the Cubs. Joe DiMaggio and Tommy Henrich are the only two Yankee players that we can clearly identify in the crowd, but this photo clearly does not encompass the entire room. The photo has adhered to the class in a number of areas and surface emulsions and light abrasions are also visible. In Good condition overall. Framed to total dimensions of 20 x 10.5 inches. Total: 4 large-format framed photos. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $588
