1969 Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies Exhibition Game Broadside
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $353
This extremely rare broadside heralds a charity game between the defending World Champion Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium on May 5, 1969. As clearly noted, this exhibition contest represented the "21st Annual Junior Baseball Federation Game" with the proceeds going to "Help 50,000 Youngsters Play Sandlot Baseball." Featured on the broadside are the portrait images of Denny McLain, Al Kaline, Willie Horton, and Mickey Stanley for Detroit, and Richie Allen, Larry Hisle, Cookie Rojas, and Johnny Callison for the Phillies. Printed by Posters, Inc., of Philadelphia. This is an outstanding and very unusual broadside from an era in which very few baseball broadsides were produced, and the first example we have ever seen. The cardboard broadside (13.75 x 22 inches) displays a few small areas of very light foxing, minor edge tears, and a few light border creases. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Also included with the broadside is a 1961 Nu-Card "Baseball Scoops" advertising display. This store display cardboard sign features a black-and-white rendition of card #465 "Kaline Hits 3 Homers, 2 in Same Inning." The piece (14.25 x 18 inches) displays a single nail hole at both the top and bottom, as well as a corner chip in the upper left, numerous border tears (one of which is repaired with clear tape along the top), and moderate creasing throughout. In Good condition overall. Total: 2 displays. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$400. SOLD FOR $353
