1911 T9 Turkey Red Boxing Cabinets Complete Set (26): #5 PSA Set Registry!
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $11,163
Extraordinary high-grade complete set of twenty-six different cards from the classic T9 Turkey Red boxing series, including Jack Johnson, Jim Jeffries, and Abe Attell (who is credited with being the middleman between the gamblers and players involved in the "fix" of the 1919 World Series). Issued in conjunction with the T3 Turkey Red baseball series, the T9 boxing set (#51-76) features twenty-six champion boxers of the day, and is widely considered the most attractive and most desirable of all boxing issues. This is literally one of the finest sets of T9 Turkey Red Boxers ever assembled! This set is listed on the PSA Set Registry. It is the fifth-highest graded set, with an average grade of 5.02. All twenty-six cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA, as follows: four EX-MT 6s, one EX+ 5.5, nineteen EX 5s, and two VG-EX 4s. T9s have long been recognized as one of the most popular and beautiful of all boxing cards, and are rarely offered as a complete set. They are also very condition-sensitive. This complete set has been painstakingly assembled, with constant upgrading, at enormous expense, and with a tremendous investment in time and effort by an extremely dedicated collector over a period of many years. It is by far the finest set of this popular issue we have ever seen or offered. The complete PSA grading composite follows: Four cards are graded EX-MT 6: #51 Driscoll (one of only three with none graded higher), 53 Wolgast (one of only two with none graded higher), 60 Moran (one graded higher), and 61 Marto (one of only two with none graded higher; considered to be one of the toughest cards to obtain in high-grade). One card is graded EX+ 5.5: #67 Ketchel. (It is fascinating to note that this card was issued a year after his passing. Ketchel was murdered in 1910 while in training for a scheduled bout against Jack Johnson. The premium offer on the back of the T9 Ketchel, as listed at the bottom of the reverse of the card, expires June 30, 1911.) Nineteen cards are graded EX 5: #52 Attell (only two graded higher), 54 Coulon (only one graded higher), 55 Jim Jeffries, 56, 57 Nelson, 58 McFarland, 59, 62 (only two graded higher), 63 (only two graded higher), 64 Papke (only two graded higher), 65 Langford (only three graded higher), 66 (only three graded higher), 68 Jeannette (only two graded higher), 69 (only one graded higher), 70 (only one graded higher), 71 (only one graded higher), 73 (only three graded higher), 74 (only three graded higher), and 75 O'Brien (only three graded higher). Two cards are graded VG-EX 4: #72 and 76 Jack Johnson (legendary heavyweight champion). This set was assembled with a concern for all factors, including special consideration to overall eye-appeal. Also please note that none of these cards has been submitted for review for the recently introduced PSA half-grades. There is no question that some of these cards would be awarded higher half-grades if submitted for review. This is simply an amazing high-grade complete set of the most desirable boxing issue ever produced. Even without the confirmation of the PSA Set Registry, it would be obvious that this set is easily one of the finest in the world. The total SMR value of $12,125 for the set does not account for the tremendous amount of time, energy, and effort that have been invested in its assembly. For those who can consider buying a set of this caliber, this set represents a remarkable and unique opportunity. Total: 26 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $11,163
