1927 W. A. A. C. Churchman "Famous Golfers" PSA-Graded Near-Complete Set (38/50)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $7,638

Extraordinary ultra high-grade near-complete set of 1927 W. A. & A. C. Churchman "Famous Golfers" cards. Missing just twelve cards for completion (#1, 14 Hagen, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27 Jones, 28 Jones, 33 Morris, 41, 47 Vardon, and 49 Vardon). The entire near-set of thirty-eight cards has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. The set includes one GEM MINT 10, thirteen MINT 9s (including Hagen), twenty NM-MT 8s, one EX-MT+ 6.5s, two EX-MT 6s, and one EX 5. This is an extraordinary near set which has been assembled by an extremely dedicated and condition-conscious collector over a period of many years. The PSA grades are as follows: One GEM MINT 10: #22 (this is the only PSA 10 ever given to any card from this issue). Thirteen MINT 9: #10, 13 Hagen (Highest Graded!), 16, 18, 26, 30, 31, 34, 35, 39, 40, 42 Taylor, and 43. Twenty NM-MT 8: #2 Ball, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12, 15, 17, 24, 29, 32, 36, 37, 38, 44 Vardon, 45 Vardon, 46 Vardon, 48, and 50 (last card in set). One EX-MT+ 6.5: #6 Braid. Two EX-MT 6: #7 Braid and 20. One EX 5: #3 Barnes. Many of these cards are the highest (20 cards) or second-highest (9 cards) graded examples in the PSA Population Report. Compared to vintage baseball cards, golf cards are beginning to be recognized as offering an outstanding value. This is an extraordinary high-grade near set of one of the premier golf sets of the era. The SMR value for the individual cards is $10,970 (there is no SMR value for the GEM MINT 10 or EX-MT+ 6.5 grades, so the two examples graded at these levels, were not included in the total value). Total: 38 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $5,000++ . SOLD FOR $7,638
