In The Stretch - 1972 Limited-Edition LeRoy Neiman Serigraph
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $823
Titled In The Stretch , issued in 1972, serigraph numbered "13/250," signed in pencil by Neiman (grading "10") in the lower margin. Edition limited to 379 total impressions (250 numbered impressions, 99 unnumbered artist's proofs, and 30 numbered artist's proofs). This is one of Neiman's earliest serigraphs and it features a subject that he returned to a number of times over the years: horse racing. His views on the artistic aspect of the sport are best described through his own commentary contained in LeRoy Neiman - Winners , a thirty-year retrospective of Neiman's work and career, published in 1983 by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. "Through the color, the beauty, the movement, and the pageantry of horse racing, there exists an imperial quality. Man and beast are partners. It is a festival of colors, the full spectrum of the jockey silks accentuated by the wiry, harlequin figures of the riders. Headlong into the clubhouse turn, bunched in their saddles, the silken hues are like a bouquet of flowers." The serigraph measures 28 x 21 inches (image area) and is in Near Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 35.5 x 30 inches. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $823
