Original Cover Painting for Famous Monsters of Filmland #67 (July 1970)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $8,225

Original oil-on-board painting by Vic Prezio used as the cover art for Famous Monsters of Filmland , published in July 1970. The cover painting features a scantily clad damsel in distress about to meet her fate and a black-robbed Lon Chaney Jr. in his starring role in the cult classic Witchcraft, a most fitting image for a Famous Monsters edition titled "Special Issue on Withches & Witchcraft!" The accompanying issue's credit text on the interior reads "Just when things were looking purrty BLACK, artist Vic Prezio painted this a CATemy Award pic!" ( The Black Cat is the issue's featured film review). In the world of Famous Monsters , the terror of course is all in good fun. This was Lon Chaney Jr.'s last starring role in a feature film, and the image is pure camp from a bygone era as intended. Vic Prezio was a particularly prominent Warren cover artist. Starting in January 1968, Prezio would follow Davis, Frazetta, Morrow, Adkins, and Orlando to become the sixth artist to receive cover assignments for Warren's horror line. He turned out to be one of the company's most prolific artists, as well, producing a total of ten covers for the horror comics and seven more for the monster magazines. According to the exhaustively researched reference work, The Warren Companion (Twomorrows Publishing, 2001), he is recognized as being sixth on the list for total output by Warren's cover artists, a fact that all alone speaks volumes regarding his importance to the company's history. Together with a copy of Famous Monsters of Filmland #67 featuring this image on the cover. Dimensions: 14.5 x 18.75 inches (image area). Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
