Original Enrich Torres Cover Painting for Vampirella #96 (May 1981)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,231
IMPORTANT ADDENDUM: We have left the title (above) and description (below) of this lot exactly as they appear in the printed catalog so as to not create confusion, but each has an error with reference to the identification of the artist that created this work. We have learned that this painting is actually by artist Jordi Longaron, a very well known and accomplished Warren artist in his own right, as opposed to by Enrich. Enrich has always been credited as the artist of this painting in the past, is even credited as the artist in the May 1981 magazine on which this cover painting appears, and has been credited as the artist in all books and referece works over the years, but this is due to an error made by Warren Publishing in 1981 that has been repeated countless times over the years. REA thanks Vampirella original art "Super Collector" Marc Pecorella for sharing this information with us and allowing us to post this addendum!
Original oil-on-canvas painting by Enrich Torres used as the cover art for Vampirella #96, published in May 1981. The image illustrates the issue's lead story: "The Hound of Hell." This is an outstanding, tremendously detailed, and very rare original Vampirella cover painting by the legendary "Enric" (as he is widely known). Enrich Torres is universally recognized as the master of Vampirella cover paintings. He is responsible for fifty-four of the cover paintings which appeared on the original 112 original Vampirella issues (two paintings appeared on more than one issue). These covers are among the most important and widely recognized works in all of modern illustration art, and are largely responsible for the prominence, success, and popularity of the entire Vampirella line. Few artists were able to capture the horror of the Warren universe so effectively, or to have such a lasting impact on an entire genre. His work is rare, especially ideal examples such as this, and is held in the highest esteem among collectors. The image was "flipped" left to right when published (a common practice in the magazine industry) to accommodate the added cover text. Dimensions: 13.5 x 17.75 inches (image area). Matted and framed to total dimensions of 21 x 25.5 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
