1937 R21 "Ripley's Believe It or Not" PSA-Graded Near Set (34 of 48)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $2,644

1937 R21 "Ripley's Believe It or Not" collection of 34 cards of the 48 in the set, each graded and encapsulated by PSA. "Ripley's" were printed in sheets of twenty-four cards and issued in two separate twenty-four card series (#1-24 and #25-48). The "Ripley's Believe It or Not" set is one of the great classics of nonsport cards. Very few complete sets have ever been assembled (we have never had one), in part because of the rarity of the high-number series. This extremely substantial collection represents a near-complete set consisting of seventeen low-number and seventeen rare high-number series cards. This is the largest group of "Ripley's" we have ever offered! This set has always been appreciated as one of the rarest and most unusual of all 1930s nonsport card issues. It's impossible not to like them! This is what really rare 1930s nonsport bubble-gum cards are supposed to look like! The set was produced in 1937 by the Wolverine Gum Company. Each card features an incredible fact or story from the Ripley's archives. Fourteen cards are missing for completion (#1, 3, 4, 11, 13, 21, 24, 29, 30, 33, 38, 41, 46, and 48). The PSA grades are as follows: One NM-MT 8 (OC): #19. Three NM 7: #2, 5, and 7 (MC). Two EX-MT 6: #14 and 22. One EX+ 5.5: #10. Six EX 5: #8, 9, 16, 18, 20, and 27. Eleven VG-EX 4: #7, 12, 17, 23, 26, 28, 32, 35, 39, 40, and 43. Three VG 3: #31, 45, and 47. Three GOOD 2: #6, 34, and 42. Four PR 1: #25, 36, 37, and 44. Exceptionally bright, crisp, and clean. This is an extremely attractive and substantial collection of this rare and fascinating 1930s nonsport-card issue. Total: 34 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200+. SOLD FOR $2,644
