Original 1995 Ron Lewis Painting - Hockey's 500 Goal Scorers
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $10,575
In August 1995, the original promoters of the first 500 Home Run Club signing show in Atlantic City successfully organized a similar signing-show event featuring all nineteen professional hockey players who had scored 500 or more goals in their careers. (All were still living at the time.) In conjunction with that significant signing event, the promoters commissioned Ron Lewis to create a signature artwork that would be used to produce a limited edition of high-quality art lithographs and posters for signing to commemorate the historic gathering. That limited-edition lithograph has been one of the great classics of hockey collecting ever since. Offered here is the very painting produced by Lewis for that event. It has been consigned to this auction directly by the original organizer of the event! This enormous oil-on-canvas painting, which measures an incredible 60 x 32 inches, pictures each of those nineteen Hockey legends: Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Maurice Richard, Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Dino Ciccarelli, Mike Bossy, Jean Beliveau, Gil Perreault, Lanny McDonald, Johnny Bucyk, Frank Mahovlich, Bryan Trottier, Marcel Dionne, Guy Lafleur, Michel Goulet, Mike Gartner, and Jari Kurri. This painting has never before been offered for sale, either privately or publicly. Included with the painting are seven of the original show posters (37.5 x 22.75 inches) plus a limited-edition signed lithograph featuring the signatures of sixteen of the nineteen players who attended the show (Gretzky, Gartner, and Kurri did not attend). The lithograph (37.5 x 22.75 inches) has been signed in blue Sharpie (grading "10") along the base by the sixteen players as well as by Ron Lewis. Hand numbered "176/200 AP" (Artist's Proof) in the lower right. Together with an original fold-over advertising flyer (8.5 x 11 inches) for the event and smaller handout (3.5 x 8 inches), both of which feature this very image. As part of the promotion for the show, each paying guest was given a poster free of charge upon admission. A limited number of 200 signed lithographs, featuring the signatures of the sixteen attending players were also available for sale to collectors and immediately sold out. Ron Lewis is one of the finest and most prominent sports artists alive today and is best known for his famous special-event artworks such as this 500 Goal Scorers painting, the gathering of the 1961 Yankees, and his 500 Home Run Club artworks. The painting is in Near Mint condition. The seven posters, lithograph, and large flyer are all in Excellent to Mint condition. The smaller flyer displays a tear and is in Very Good condition. Total: 11 items (original artwork, seven posters, signed lithograph, and two flyers). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $10,575
