1910 PC796 Sepia Christy Mathewson Postcard

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,350

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Magnificent example of Christy Mathewson from the rare and highly regarded PC796 sepia postcard set issued in 1910. This card is one of the highlights from a collection of nine PC796 postcards that have just recently been discovered by a noncollecting family, and are being offered as seven different lots in this auction. The manufacturer of this sepia-toned postcard series is unknown. The PC796 set is one of the most striking sets of the era. The card is bright and clean, both front and back, with the faintest hint of an impression from storage in an old-fashioned style photo album (the type in which cards are "tipped in") in the upper right and left corners (barely visible) and the slightest hint of corner wear. This card has a strong Excellent appearance. It has never been mailed and has no writing on its traditional postcard reverse. This is an exceptionally rare and impressive card of one of the era's most legendary stars. Dimensions: 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,350
