1910 PC796 Sepia Mordecai Brown Postcard

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,175

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Tremendous high-grade example of Hall of Fame pitcher Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown from the rare and highly regarded PC796 sepia postcard set issued in 1910. This card is one of the highlights from a collection of nine PC796 postcards that have just recently been discovered by a noncollecting family, and are being offered as seven different lots in this auction. The manufacturer of this sepia-toned postcard series is unknown. The PC796 set is one of the most visually appealing sets of the era. This is one of the most unusual images of Brown ever to be featured on a baseball card. Brown is pictured in mid-pitching motion, and upon close examination one can actually see Brown's missing index finger on his pitching hand. The card is perfectly clean both front and back, with four square corners with just a hint of wear. Downgraded from Ex-Mt due to a tiny surface wrinkle in the background and the faintest hint of a few diagonal impressions from storage in an old fashioned style photo album (the type in which cards are "tipped in") barely visible in the upper right corner (when held horizontal) of the reverse. The card has never been mailed and has no writing on its traditional postcard reverse. This is an exceptionally rare and magnificent card of legendary Hall of Fame pitcher Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown. Dimensions: 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,175
