1909-1911 T206 White Border Near-Complete PSA-Graded Set (496 of 524)

Starting Bid - $15,000, Sold For - $35,250

The 496 cards in this group comprise 95% of a complete set. This T206 near-set is highlighted by seventy Hall of Famers, including all four Ty Cobb cards, three Christy Mathewsons, two Walter Johnsons, three Cy Youngs, as well as many rarities (including Elberfeld – portrait, Wash.) and 45 of the 48 scarce Southern League series cards. The missing twenty-eight cards include the "Big 4," G. Brown/Wash., Brown/Cubs, Chase/black cap, Clarke/port., Dahlen/Brooklyn, Demmitt/St. Louis, Flick, Lajoie/port., O'Hara/St. Louis, Smith/Chicago & Boston, and three Southern League series cards. There is little need for a formal introduction to the T206 White Borders set, the single most important and highly collected issue among all tobacco and all vintage cards. This is an extremely attractive and clean near-complete set of 496 cards. The cards span all grades and include many significant condition highlights; the entire set has tremendous eye-appeal across the board and even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. This is a very carefully assembled set put together by a dedicated collector over a period of many years. Few cards have creases, and most cards have been downgraded solely due to normal corner and edge wear. It would be a challenge in any era to assemble such an attractive T206 set, and all the more challenging to find a set of this extraordinary quality already assembled and available for sale as a unit today. Any T206 set, of course, naturally has a tremendous "break value" and most quality sets are broken up and sold individually. This is a very clean, exceptionally attractive, and carefully assembled collection, representing a strong foundation for the complete assembly of a magnificent set. Most of the cards have Piedmont or Sweet Caporal backs, but also included are Hindu, American Beauty, Sovereign, Polar Bear, and Old Mill. The entire set is graded and encapsulated by PSA. The set is comprised of three EX-MT 6 (all qualified), two EX+ 5.5, forty-five EX 5 (four are qualified), thirty VG-EX+ 4.5, 251 VG-EX 4 (eight are qualified), twenty-five VG+ 3.5, eighty-four VG 3 (four are qualified), five GOOD+ 2.5, thirty GOOD 2 (three are qualified), six FR 1.5, and fifteen PR 1 (four are qualified).

For convenience, we are providing here the grades of all seventy Hall of Famers and additional key cards: PSA grading composite: 3 cards are graded EX-MT 6: Devore (MK), Ford (MC), and Lumley (MC). 2 cards are graded EX+ 5.5: Barger and Hunter. 45 cards are graded EX 5: including Beckley, Jennings (one hand), Marquard (hands at thighs), and Walsh. 30 cards are graded VG-EX+ 4.5: including Chase (blue) and Cobb (bat off). 251 cards are graded VG-EX 4: including Baker, Bresnahan (port.), Brown (Chicago), Chance (red), Chase (trophy), Chase (pink), Chesbro, Cicotte (Black Sox), Clarke (bat), Collins (Phila.), J. Collins (Minn.), Crawford (bat, Polar Bear back), Duffy, Evers (port.), Evers (Chicago, Sovereign back), Gandil (Black Sox), Griffith (bat), Griffith (port., Sovereign back), Jennings (both hands), Jennings (MC, port.), Joss (port.), Keeler (port.), Mathewson (dark cap), Mathewson (white cap), McGinnity, McGraw (finger in air), McGraw (glove), McGraw (no cap), McGraw (cap), Speaker, Wallace, Wheat, Willis (bat, Polar Bear back), and Willis (throw). 25 cards are graded VG+ 3.5: including Brown (port.), G. Davis, and Evers (Cubs). 84 cards are graded VG 3: including Bender (trees), Bender (port.), Bresnahan (bat), Chance (yellow, Polar Bear back), Cobb (red, Polar Bear back), Cobb (bat on), Crawford (throwing), Huggins (hands at mouth), Huggins (port.), Johnson (port.), Joss (hands at chest), Keeler (bat), Lajoie (throwing), Marquard (follow thru), Tinker (bat on), Waddell (port.), Waddell (throwing), Young (glove), and Young (port.). 5 cards are graded GOOD+ 2.5: Clarke (Cleveland), Dougherty (port., Hindu back), Gray, Lindaman, and Shaw (Providence). 30 cards are graded GOOD 2: including Bender (no trees, Polar Bear back), Chance (batting), Cobb (green), Johnson (MK, hands at chest), Kelley, Kleinow (Boston), Marquard (port.), and Tinker (hands on knees). 6 cards are graded FR 1.5: including Elberfeld (Wash., port.), Lajoie (bat, Sovereign back), Mathewson (port.), and Tinker (port.). 15 cards are graded PR 1: including Chase (white cap), Lundgren (Chicago), Tinker (bat off), Willis (port.), and Young (MK, bare hand). This is a set with tremendous eye-appeal, appearing at a glance considerably stronger than suggested by the very respectable and accurate condition composite and individual grades listed above. T206s in PSA NM 7, PSA NM-MT 8, or higher grades have risen to astounding levels that are unaffordable for most collectors. Impressive cards ranging in grade from Vg to Excellent condition, of which this near-set is primarily comprised, represent one of the most outstanding values in all vintage-card collecting. This is a beautiful near-complete set of T206 White Borders, the most popular and classic set of the era, in an extremely desirable overall grade. The SMR value for this collection (not including the twenty-six cards that are qualified) is $49,802. Total: 496 cards. Reserve $15,000. Estimate $30,000++. SOLD FOR $35,250
