1909-1911 T206 Sherry Magie - Error SGC VG/EX 50

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $23,500

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Superb high-grade example of T206 Sherry Magie (Magee), one of card collecting's most legendary rarities. One of only three examples graded at this level by SGC; only two examples have ever been graded higher! This is a particularly strong Magie error card, one of the best and highest-grade examples we have seen. (In fact, we have never offered a higher-grade example.) Interesting provenance note: This very same Magie card that was sold at Sotheby's on February 29, 1992, appearing as Lot #151. In addition to the Magie, this same auction also included a Wagner, Plank, and balance of the T206 set, all from the same collection). Wagner, Plank, Magie, and Doyle/NY Nat'l (hands above head) are the baseball-card rarities that have long been referred to as "The Big Four" from the T206 White Borders series. These four baseball cards have traditionally represented the height of rarity, desirability, and value in the baseball-card world. This is a magnificent example of T206 Magie. Crisp and clean, with flawless bright colors, no creases, well-centered, and with light, even wear to the corners (a little more wear on the lower right). It is particularly rare to find such a problem-free example of this card. The reverse of the card features a crisply printed advertisement for Piedmont Cigarettes (150 Subjects, Factory No. 25) centered to the right. This is an exceptional high-grade example of this legendary rarity. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $23,500
