1909-1911 T206 Walter Johnson - Rookie Card (American Beauty 350 Back)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,175

Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Hands-at-chest pose. Very attractive rookie card of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson with the very unusual and scarce American Beauty advertising reverse. Johnson, of course, is one of the key Hall of Famers in the T206 White Borders set. In addition to being Johnson's rookie card, the offered example is especially noteworthy as the reverse has an advertisement for American Beauty Cigarettes (no frame 350). American Beauty 350 (no frame) is a scarce back, certainly not in the same league as Drum or Uzit, but very unusual, and seen far less often than the standard Piedmont or Sweet Caporal advertising back. It is bright and clean, with a deep blue background, a couple of tiny corner creases, and even wear on the corners. Centered 40/60 left to right. The American Beauty advertising on the back is boldly printed and centered to the left. Without reference to the scarce back (SMR does not yet distinguish scarce backs but collectors often do), SMR value is $700. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,175
