1910 "Orange Borders" Candy Box Collection Including Ty Cobb (15)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,938
For many decades this rare set has been referred to by advanced collectors as "Orange Borders." In 1910 the "Geo. Davis Co., Inc." and the "P.R. Warren Co." of Massachusetts together issued this striking and extraordinarily rare package-design set, with two cards featured on each box of "American Sports - Candy and Jewelry" (one on the front, and one on the back). It is rare to find even common player sample cards from this issue, let alone a collection of fifteen including four Hall of Famers highlighted by Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie, as featured here. This group is from an old-time collector who purchased these in 1968 for sixty cents (as noted by the original glassine envelope, which accompanies). These cards have not seen the light of day since their purchase over forty years ago (and this fact no doubt relates to their overall brightness and crispness). The collection is comprised of the following: Bergen (Pr), Carrigan (Gd), Chase (no borders, otherwise Fr), Cobb (HOF, back damage otherwise Vg-Ex), Crawford (HOF, Gd), Lajoie (HOF, Gd), McGraw (HOF, Pr), Mullin (Gd), Stahl (Gd-Vg), three American League Champions 1909 Detroit (Ex, Vg-Ex, and Vg), and three National League Champions 1909 Pirates with Honus Wagner (all Vg). It is interesting to note that despite the small size of the players on the team cards, most can be easily recognized, particularly Honus Wagner (second row, far right). The "Orange Borders" have always been among the most collected and highly prized of all 1910-era package design cards. This is a very attractive and substantial collection of one of the most elusive of all 1910-era cards, and featuring the key card to the set: Ty Cobb. Total: 15 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,938
