1911-1914 D304 Brunners Bread Complete Set (25): #2 SGC Set Registry!
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $22,325
Presented is an extraordinary complete set of twenty-five D304 Brunners Bread cards (of which twelve are Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb, Honus Wager, Cy Young, and Christy Mathewson), all graded and encapsulated by SGC. This is the first D304 Brunners Bread complete set we have ever presented at auction. Issued by a bakery in the Buffalo, New York, area, D304s are actually known with five different back styles (Brunners, Butter Krust, General Baking Co., Weber Bakery, and Martens Bakery). Similar in design to tobacco and candy cards of the era, Brunners measure slightly larger than T206s, at 1.75 x 2.5 inches, and are actually considerably rarer than most 1910-era “E” and “T” card issues. The fronts feature very attractive full-color illustrations, each of which is unique to this issue. In recent years collectors have shown a growing appreciation for the mystique of the rarest vintage-card issues. D304s certainly fall into this category, and have always been appreciated but are rarely offered. D304 sets were issued in 1911, 1912, 1913, and 1914. The set is rated as the number-two set on the SGC Set Registry with an overall grade average of 38.00. This is a beautiful medium-grade set and especially strong for D304s, and almost all of these cards have an appearance far superior to their assigned grades. The Cy Young card is an incredible high-grade example (EX 60 by SGC), and is among the numerous significant highlights of the set. The set has been very carefully assembled by an extremely dedicated collector over a period of many years, and represents a tremendous collecting achievement. All the cards in this set have Brunners advertising on the backs (unless otherwise noted). SGC Condition Report: Three EX 60: Bender (HOF), Marquard (HOF), and Young (HOF; Butter Krust). Four VG/EX 50: Barry, Collins (HOF; Weber Bakery), Meyers, and O'Toole. Six VG 40: Chance/Chicago (HOF), Crawford (HOF), Lajoie (HOF), Mathewson (HOF), Shafer, and Tenney. Nine GOOD 30: Baker (HOF), Cobb (HOF; this is a very sharp-looking card in all respects with extraordinary eye-appeal, centered slightly to the bottom left, with brilliant colors, virtually flawless registration, and a few creases in the lower right corner), Evers/Chicago (HOF), Fletcher, Herzog, Kelly, Merkle, Rucker, and Wagner (HOF). Three FAIR 20: Bell, Chase/NY, and Crandall/NY. The exceptional across-the-board high quality of the cards comprising this set is not an accident. The consignor is an extremely advanced collector who has invested literally years in the assembly and upgrading of the set, with a discerning eye for value, condition, and overall visual appeal. The break value is extremely substantial. This is an extraordinary collection, the #2 set on the SGC Registry, and the only complete set of this rare and distinctive prewar food issue that we have ever offered. Total 25 cards.
