1909-1911 E254 Colgan's Chips Collection (119 cards)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $6,463
Among the most unique and distinctive cards ever produced are the 1909-1911 E254 Colgan's Chips series. The cards are actually circular (1-7/16 inches in diameter) and were issued as inserts with Colgan's Chips ("The Gum That's Round") in the round Colgan's Chips gum tins. Offered is a substantial collection of 118 different E254 Colgan's Chips cards (plus one 1913 E270 Tin Top for a total of 119 cards) including Hall of Famers Harry Hooper (Bos. NL, Ex), Addie Joss (Ex), Rube Waddell (St. Louis, Ex-Mt), and Honus Wagner (Pr). The balance of the cards are in varying high-grade conditions ranging from Ex to Nr/Mt (mostly Ex-Mt) with the exception of six which are Vg and lesser. The balance of the cards include the following: Archer (1913 E270 Tin Tops), Abbatichio, Adams, Altizer (Cin.), Austin (NY), Bailey, Barry, Bates (Cin.), Bates (Phi., black letters), Beaumont (Bos.), Beaumont (Chi.), Becker, Bell, Bemis (Cle.), Birmingham, Bransfield, Bridwell, Brockett, Burch, Bush, Camnitz, Clarke (Cin.), Conroy, Criss, Daubert (Bklyn), Davis (Phi.), Demmett (NY), Devlin, Donovan, Doolin, Dougherty, Downey, Doyle, Eagan, Elberfield (Wash.), Elberfield (NY), Ellis, Engle (NY), Engle (Bos.), Evans, Fromme, Ferguson, Gardner (Bos.), Gaspar, Getz (Bos.), Gibson, Hahn, Hartsel, Hartzell (St. Louis ), Hartzell (NY), Hofman, Hulswitt (St. Louis), Hummel, Hunter, D. Jones, T. Jones, Jordon (Bklyn), Killefer, Killian (Det.), Knabe, Knight, Konetchy, Lange, Leach, Lelivelt, Lindaman (Bos.), Lord, Maddox, Mattern, McBride, McCormick, McIntyre (Det.), McLean, Meyers, Milan, Miller, Mitchell, Moriarty, Mullin (name correct), Murphy, Murray (NY), Oakes, Overall, Parent, Paskert (Cin.), Paskert (Phi.), Pfeister, Phillipe, Purtell (Chi.), Raymond, B. Reilly, Reulbach, Rowan (Cin.), Rucker, Sallee, Scheckard, Schulte, Seymour (NY), Siner, Snodgrass, Spade (Cin.), Sparks (Phi.), Steinfeldt, Stone, Stovall, Street, Summers (white in uniform), Tannehill, Turner, Unglaub (Wash.), White (Bos.), Willett, Wilson, Wiltse, and Zimmerman. E254 Colgan's Chips are far rarer than most tobacco cards of the era, are one of the most interesting sets ever produced, and are one of the most overlooked of all vintage sets. In our opinion, they represent one of the best values of all 1910-era baseball issues. This is a very attractive collection of cards, including a few Hall of Famers (the set has very few HOFers), from this distinctive early gum issue. Total: 119 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
