1910 T210 Old Mill Tobacco Casey Stengel
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $10,575
Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Magnificent example of key T210 Red Border Casey Stengel, featured as an outfielder with Maysville of the Blue Grass League, at the very beginning of his career. This is one of card collecting's most interesting and noteworthy tobacco-card rarities. Stengel (from Series 6) is not quite as rare as Joe Jackson (from Series 8) in the T210 Old Mill set, though it is an extremely rare card in its own right, and still far rarer than a T206 Wagner, with fewer than twenty examples known. Together Jackson and Stengel are the two most famous cards from this series, and two of the rarest and most highly prized of all tobacco cards. The offered example is an extremely attractive card, far better than most T210 Old Mill cards (which with their bright red borders are so susceptible to corner and edge wear). Bright and clean, with very consistent, even corner rounding, centered to the right (approximately 75/25 left to right), and very little chipping to the fragile red borders. The reverse has a few pinpoint age spots, of very little consequence, and is otherwise bright and clean, with strong, crisp printing of the advertisement for Old Mill Cigarettes. The front of the card has only a single very tiny hairline surface crease to Stengel's left (running from his shoulder to the border), barely visible only when the card is tilted at the proper angle. This is an extremely attractive and pleasing Vg-Ex condition example of one of the two key cards in the T210 set, and one of the premier Hall of Fame rarities in all of 1910-era tobacco-card collecting. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $10,575
