1910 T210 Old Mill Tobacco "Series 8" Southern Assn. Complete Set Minus 1 (113/114)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $26,438

Complete set (minus 1) of 113 different 1910 T210 Old Mill "Series 8" cards featuring Southern Assn. players. Missing only the rare Joe Jackson for completion. (The Jackson originally accompanied the set and has been separated to be offered as its own lot.) The T210 set is actually comprised of eight different series, each a set unto itself, and each representing a different minor league. The "Series 8" cards feature players from the Southern Association. The 114 cards of the eighth series are universally recognized as among the rarest cards in the T210 Old Mill set. In fact, it is precisely because Joe Jackson appears in the eighth series that he is so rare in the Old Mill set. A complete T210 series (in this case missing one card) is very rarely offered. This "Series 8" set (minus Jackson) is part of an extraordinary complete T210 Old Mill set (Series 1 through 8) that was assembled over a period of many years by an extremely advanced collector, and that is being offered by series in this auction. Seventy-one cards range from Vg-Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex/Ex-Mt), and forty-two are in slightly lesser grade (mostly Vg). While every card in this lot is much rarer than the T206 Wagner, we cannot help but note that two players in this collection of "Series 8" cards are named Wagner. This complete "Series 8" set (minus 1) consists of the following: Allen (Memphis), Allen (Mobile), Anderson, Babb, Bartley, Bauer, Bay, Bayliss, Berger, Bernhard, Bitroff, Breitenstein, Bronkie, Brooks, Burnett, Cafalu, Carson, Case, Chappelle, Cohen, Collins, Crandall, Cross, Daly, Davis, Demaree, DeMontreville, E. DeMontreville, Dick, Dobbs, Dudley, Dunn, Elliot, Emery, Erloff, Farrell, Fisher, Fleharty, Flood, Foster, Fritz, Greminger, Gribbon, Griffin, Gygil, Hanks, Hart, Hess, Hickman, Hohnhorst, Huelsman, Jordan, Kane, Kelly, Kerwin, Keupper, LaFitte, Larsen, Lindsay, Lynch, Manuel, Manush, Marcan, Maxwell, McBride, McCreery, McGilvray, McLaurin, McTigue, Miller (Chattanooga), Miller (Montgomery), Molesworth, Moran, Newton, Nolley, Osteen, Ower, Paige, Patterson, Pepe, Perdue, Peters, Phillips, Pratt, Rementer, Rhodes, Rhoton, Robertson, Rogers, Rohe, Schlitzer, Schopp, Seabough, Seitz, Siegle, Smith, Sid Smith, Steele, Swacina, Sweeney, Thomas (fielding), Thomas (portrait), Vinson, Wagner (Birmingham), Wagner (Mobile), Walker, Wanner, Whiteman, Whitney, Wilder, Wiseman, and Yerkes. The T210 Old Mill Tobacco card set has always been extremely highly regarded by advanced collectors due to its featuring so many players that appear in no other sets, as well as its very distinctive design, its scarcity compared to most other tobacco-card sets of the era, and its extremely striking photos that are unique to the set. The T210 Old Mill set is also well known by all collectors due to its inclusion of Joe Jackson (Series 8) and Casey Stengel (Series 6), two of the most famous and valuable of all baseball cards. It is virtually impossible to complete the entire set and only a few complete sets (or even sets minus a few cards) have ever been assembled. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a complete set (minus 1 card) of one of the key series, featuring Southern Assn. players of the Southern League (interesting note: some of these players will be familiar for their appearance in T206), painstakingly assembled by an an extremely dedicated advanced collector. As is often the case with these red-bordered cards, there is some wear to the red borders, mostly in the corners. This is a particularly impressive group, far better than normally found, with many cards in very high grade for this condition-sensitive issue. Total: 113 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $26,438
