1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders Complete Set (50): #3 PSA Registry! (7.77 GPA)

Starting Bid - $10,000, Sold For - $44,063

Extraordinary ultra high-grade world-class complete set of 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders (50 cards), all graded and encapsulated by PSA. This is an incredible high-grade complete set of this classic tobacco issue! It is easily one of the finest T201 Mecca Double Folder sets to ever be assembled in the history of card collecting, and it is by far the finest set we have ever seen or offered. This set is listed on the PSA Set Registry. It is the third-highest graded set, with an astounding average grade of 7.77. Forty-nine cards range from Nr/Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt+, and only one is lesser (Ex-Mt). The one card which received a lesser grade is a great-looking card that appears Nr/Mt. T201s are almost frequently downgraded due to a minor flaws which are so common to the issue, making high-grade examples (let alone high-grade sets) particularly rare. The thin stock on which T201s are printed makes them especially susceptible to very light corner rounding and surface wrinkles. In the following condition composite, identifying card numbers are those provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. The PSA grades are as follows: Two NM-MT+ 8.5: #37 and 48 Payne/Walsh (HOF). Thirty-two NM-MT 8: #3, 4, 6 Bender/Oldring (HOF), 7 Bergen/Wheat (HOF), 8, 9 Bresnahan/Huggins (HOF), 10 Mathewson/Bridwell (HOF; it is interesting to note that Mathewson's name is misspelled "Matthewson" on the front and correctly spelled on the back), 11 Brown/Hofman (HOF), 12 Byrne/Clarke (HOF), 16, 17 Crawford/Cobb (HOF), 18, 20, 23 Dougherty/Lord, 26, 27, 28 Lajoie/Falkenberg (HOF), 30, 32 Gardner/Speaker (HOF), 33, 34, 36, 38, 40 Johnson/Street (HOF), 41, 42 Lake/Wallace (HOF), 43, 44, 45, 46 McCarthy/McGinnity (HOF), 49, and 50 (last card in set). One NM+ 7.5: #14 Chase/Sweeney. Fourteen NM 7: #1, 2 Baker/Collins (HOF), 5, 13 Chance/Evers (HOF), 15 Cicotte/Thoney ("Black Sox"), 19, 21, 22, 24, 25, 31, 35, 39 Summers/Jennings (HOF), and 47. One EX-MT 6: #29. To put these grades into proper perspective, in the entire history of PSA, out of over six thousand T201s graded, 344 have been graded NM 7, only 239 T201s have ever been graded NM-MT 8, only eleven have been graded NM-MT+ 8.5, only thirteen have been graded MINT 9, and no examples have ever been graded GEM MINT 10. These numbers speak for themselves. As suggested by the extraordinary grades above, this is an exceptionally crisp, clean, and attractive complete set of Mecca Double Folders, literally one of the best sets in the world. This set actually has an appearance that is superior to even the already impressive assigned grades. This is an amazing set! The T201 Mecca Double Folders set includes twenty Hall of Famers and is arguably one of the best values of all 1910 tobacco-card issues. Although the consignor could perhaps realize a greater return by breaking the set up into a number of more affordable units, so much time, effort, and work has gone into its assembly, that he desired to sell the set as a single unit. We realize that potentially few collectors can seriously consider buying a complete set of this caliber, but for those who can consider such a commitment, this set represents a remarkable and unique opportunity. The total SMR value for the assigned grades is $47,430. Total: 50 cards. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $20,000/$30,000++. SOLD FOR $44,063
