1888 N172 Old Judge Mickey Welch - The Finest in Existence!
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $11,750
Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. This extraordinary card is the highest-graded N172 Old Judge example in the world of Hall of Famer “Smiling” Mickey Welch of the New York Giants (pose #486-2 - right hand at right thigh, "Welch, New Yorks"). This is the only N172 Welch graded at this level, with none graded higher. As nineteenth-century card collectors are well aware, it is extremely rare to find even a common N172 Old Judge graded NM-MT by PSA, let alone a key Hall of Famer. This is a miracle card! It is simply outstanding in all respects. We would be hard pressed to find any Old Judge card of even a common player to rival this gem. Perfectly clean, both front and back, with four sharp corners, and flawless contrast. Centered just a hint to the right (55/45 L/R). It is interesting to note that Welch's last name is misspelled as "Welsh." This is a magnificent, incredibly high quality Hall of Famer Old Judge example of "Smiling" Mickey Welch, literally the finest N172 example in the world of one of the most legendary Hall of Fame pitchers of the nineteenth century. Welch was the Major League's third 300-game winner. During his thirteen Major League seasons, he won twenty or more games nine times, including seven straight years. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973. This is a card which would be a very significant highlight in any of the world's greatest card collections, including even the most advanced Old Judge, nineteenth-century, or Hall of Famer card collection. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $11,750
