1911 M116 Sporting Life PSA-Graded Collection (4)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,293
Collection of four different high-grade 1911 M116 Sporting Life cards, including Hall of Fame pitcher Mordecai Brown and star player Hal Chase. All four cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA (all submitted by REA): Mordecai Brown (pastel, NM 7, one of only two examples graded at this level with none graded higher), Hal Chase (pastel, EX 5; this beautiful card looks NM-MT), Deacon McGuire (NM-MT 8, one of only two examples graded at this level with none graded higher), and Dots Miller (Pittsburgh, NM 7). All are crisp gems, miraculously preserved, looking today exactly as they did when issued in 1911. Many collectors consider M116 to represent one of the era's most exceptional values. In terms of the number of players featured, M116 is the second most substantial set of the 1910 era featuring major leaguers, trailing only T206. Despite being so similar in design to their T206 counterparts, M116s in general are actually far rarer, though according to price guides they are lower in value. This is an outstanding small group for this issue, very carefully chosen for purchase by our consignor in the early days of conventions in the 1980s, long before the advent of professional grading, due to their outstanding condition. All cards have razor-sharp corners and flawless registration, and are very well centered. SMR value is $1,410. Total: 4 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,293
