1911 T3 Turkey Red Cabinet-Card Collection (26)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,994

Collection of twenty-six 1911 Turkey Red cabinet cards, including five Hall of Famers. These cards were part of a very substantial totally untouched collection of 1910-era tobacco cards consigned to this auction (all cards from this collection appear in several lots of the auction), which was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. Three of the T3 Turkey Red cards from the collection (Cobb, Mathewson, and Bresnahan) are being offered as a separate three-card lot due to value. This lot represents the twenty-six remaining T3 Turkey Reds cards included in this very substantial original-owner collection. This is a mixed, mostly low-grade group, but includes six very respectable Vg examples and one Vg-Ex. Many appear stronger at a glance, and all have a very fresh appearance, with brilliant colors (this, of course, is related to having been safely stored away by the family since 1911!). Other tobacco cards of the era such as T206 are far easier to find in a relatively affordable low grade. This is because Turkey Reds, which were issued only by mail as premiums in exchange for coupons, are considerably rarer than most other classic 1910-era tobacco cards. Most of these cards have tremendous visual appeal despite their various condition problems. This is a very substantial, rarely offered group that is ideal for the collector who is interested in Turkey Reds but does not want to spend a fortune. Consists of the following: #2 (Gd), 10 (Vg), 17 Clark Griffith (approximately Gd due to stain in the lower right, otherwise Ex), 41 (Pr), 45 (Gd), 48 (Gd), 77 (Pr), 78 Frank Baker (Fr due to stain in the lower right, and a small amount of what appears to be "White Out" in lower left of reverse, otherwise Vg, Turkey Red back), 83 (Pr), 86 (Gd, Turkey Red back), 87 Eddie Collins (Vg, Turkey Red back), 88 (Gd, Turkey Red back), 90 (Fr, Turkey Red back), two 94 (Vg-Ex and Gd, both Turkey Red backs), 100 (Fr, Turkey Red back), 101 Willie Keeler (Vg), 102 (Vg, Turkey Red back), 104 (Vg), 109 (Gd, Turkey Red back), 111 (Pr), 115 (Vg), two 123 (Vg and Gd-Vg), 124 Bobby Wallace (Gd-Vg, Turkey Red back), and 126 (Gd-Vg, Turkey Red back). T3s are big cards; due to their large size they tend to be more subject to corner wear and creases than smaller cards, and were also often tacked up on walls, which is why pinholes are so common with this issue. This collection represents a substantial start toward the assembly of an outstanding low- to mid-grade set, with many cards having eye-appeal far superior than suggested by their technically accurate grades. Total: 26 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,994
