1916 Zeenut PCL Near-Complete Set (126/142) Including Southworth
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,050
Near-complete set of 127 different (126 of the 142 in set as checklisted in The Standard Catalog plus one not checklisted) 1916 Zeenut cards featuring Pacific Coast League players, highlighted by Hall of Famer Billy Southworth. One card (Decanniere - Vernon) included is not listed in the 2011 Standard Catalog checklist but is known by advanced collectors. Missing just sixteen cards for completion of all cards listed in the Standard Catalog (Bayless, Callahan, Chance, Claxton [note: Chance and Claxton are both offered separately in this auction], Crandall, Dalton, Erickson, Hagerman, Howard, Kelly, McGaffigan, Risberg [offered separately in this auction], Ryan, Speas, Wilie, and Williams). The 1916 Zeenut set is comprised of players from six different teams (Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Vernon), and is considered by many to be among the rarest of all Zeenut series. A near-complete set such as this is very rarely seen. In fact, this is the first time we have ever offered a near-set of 1916 Zeenuts. 60% of the cards range from Vg to Ex (with a few Ex-Mt), and 40% range from Pr to Gd-Vg. This is an impressive-looking group! Keys: Bohne (Gd), Decanniere (Vg), and Billy Southworth (Ex/Ex-Mt). As is usually the case with Zeenuts, the coupon at the bottom of each card has been neatly clipped away, as intended, to be redeemed for valuable prizes. Also as is usually the case with Zeenuts, most of the cards have a far superior appearance than suggested by their technically accurate modest grades. This "comes with the territory" with Zeenuts. This 1916 Zeenut near-complete set is part of an extraordinary comprehensive Zeenut collection, the finest we have ever handled. The collection was assembled over a period of many years by an extremely advanced pioneer collector, and has been broken down by year into a number of smaller but still very substantial lots. Total: 127 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $7,050
