1923 Zeenut PCL Partial Set (178) Including Paul Waner Rookie and Yellowhorse
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,994
Collection of 178 different (177 of the 196 in set as checklisted in The Standard Catalog plus one unchecklisted variation) 1923 Zeenut cards featuring Pacific Coast League players, highlighted by Hall of Famer Paul Waner's rookie card and Moses Yellowhorse. (The unchecklisted variation is Koehler - 1922 photo re-dated variation; this card is known to advanced Zeenut collectors.) The 1923 Zeenut set is comprised of players from eight different teams (Los Angeles, Oakland, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle, and Vernon). The 1923 Zeenut set is the only year the cards were issued in two different series. The "regular" series cards feature black-and-white photos and are dated 1923 (coupons have expiration date of April 1st, 1924), while the second series contains just twenty-four cards (all Oakland and San Francisco players) with sepia-toned images used from the 1922 Zeenut series, and are dated 1923 (coupons have expiration date of April 1st, 1923). A near set such as this is very rarely seen. This is the first near-complete set of 1923 Zeenut we have ever offered. 35% of the cards range from Vg to Ex (with a couple Ex-Mt), and 65% range from Pr to Gd-Vg. Keys: Paul Waner (Fr) and Yellowhorse (Pr, the letter "P" written on front and major paper loss on back). As is usually the case with Zeenuts, the coupon at the bottom of each card has been neatly clipped away, as intended, to be redeemed for valuable prizes. Also as is usually the case with Zeenuts, most of the cards have a far superior appearance than suggested by their technically accurate modest grades. This "comes with the territory" with Zeenuts. This 1923 Zeenut partial set is part of an extraordinary comprehensive Zeenut collection, the finest we have ever handled. The collection was assembled over a period of many years by an extremely advanced pioneer collector, and has been broken down by year into a number of smaller but still very substantial lots. Total: 178 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $4,994
