1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy and Related Issues Collection Including Ty Cobb (99)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,988
Collection of ninety-nine different (of the 200 in the set) E135 Collins-McCarthy (and related issues) cards including sixteen Hall of Famers, highlighted by Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby's rookie card. Issued in 1917 by the Collins-McCarthy Candy Co. of San Francisco, the 200-card black-and-white E135 set was the company's only venture into issuing cards of Major Leaguers. Unlike the somewhat similar 1916 M101-4/5 Sporting News set, these cards were never issued as complete sets to the public, and so are naturally much rarer, and were also larger than M101-4/5 cards. The E135 set was produced on a slightly thinner stock that is far more susceptible to wear, and has a very glossy surface, which is very prone to creasing. The set is commonly referred to as issued by Collins-McCarthy, but, as most collectors know, the set was actually issued by several different companies. Cards were printed with advertising for regional issuers as well. Most of the cards in this collection have Collins-McCarthy backs but also included are various advertising reverses including Boston Store (20 cards), Standard Biscuit (6 cards), H. Weil Baking (3 cards), and one blank-back. We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC. Highlights: #2 Alexander (Pr), 11 Baker (Vg/Vg-Ex), 12 Bancroft (Vg), 25 Carey (Vg), 28 Cicotte (Fr), 30 Cobb (SGC GOOD 30, the image on this card is a unique batting pose of Cobb which appears only in the Collins-McCarthy set [and related issues]), 36 Crawford (Vg), 46 Faber (Gd), 71 Heilmann (Pr), 80 Hornsby rookie card (corner clipped, otherwise Fr), 86 Jennings (Gd), 137 Rice (Gd), 139 Rixey (SGC NM 84, Boston Store back), 142 Roush (SGC EX+ 70, Boston Store back), 150 Schalk (Gd), 162 Sisler (Gd, Weil Baking back), and Wheat (Vg, Standard Biscuit back). The balance of the cards grade as follows: 20% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, 10% Ex, 25% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 45% range from Pr to Gd-Vg. This is a very attractive collection, with many condition highlights, and with a much stronger appearance than that suggested by the very respectable and technically accurate condition composite. This great-looking group includes sixteen Hall of Famers, and represents the foundation for the assembly of a tremendous set of this important issue. Total: 99 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $9,988
