1916 M101-4 and M101-5 "Sporting News" SGC-Graded Collection (105, including 17 Hall of Famers!)

Starting Bid - $4,000, Sold For - $17,625

Extremely substantial high-grade collection of 105 different M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News cards (59 cards from M101-4 Series and 46 cards from M101-5 Series), highlighted by seventeen Hall of Famers, including Nap Lajoie, Joe Tinker, and Zach Wheat. All 105 cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC. The 1916 M101-4/5 sets are two of the most highly regarded and comprehensive baseball-card sets of the era. The sets are commonly referred to as issued by The Sporting News , but, as most collectors know, the sets were actually issued by several different companies. Cards were printed with advertising for regional issuers as well as with blank banks. Most of the cards in this collection have blanks backs but also included (as noted below) are various advertising reverses, including Globe Stores, Herpolsheimer, Moorehouse Baking, and Sporting News . This is an exceptionally impressive collection of high-grade cards from one of the most substantial and important sets from the era. 1) 1916 M101-4 Sporting News (59 of 200 cards): MINT 96 (1 card): #129 Mowrey (Globe Stores back).
