1916 M101-5 Sporting News #176 Jim Thorpe
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,058
1916 M101-5 Sporting News #176 Jim Thorpe, encapsulated "Authentic" by SGC. This low-grade example represents a rare opportunity for the collector who wants a real 1916 M101-5 Thorpe at an affordable level. The M101-5 Sporting News Jim Thorpe is one of only a handful of cards featuring the legendary Jim Thorpe that was issued during his playing days as a baseball Major Leaguer, when he was a member of John McGraw's New York Giants. Thorpe's brief baseball career in the Majors lasted parts of just six seasons (1913-1919), an era in which very few card sets were issued. The only two major card issues featuring Thorpe individually as a Major Leaguer are the 1916 M101-5 Sporting News and the 1912-era E270-2 Colgan's Chips. (The 1922 Zeenut of Thorpe, also a great rarity, features Thorpe in the PCL.). Despite its obvious condition problems, this is an extremely presentable example of one of the most classic and interesting of all vintage cards. This card has been trimmed (on three of the four sides) and therefore has been encapsulated as "Authentic" by SGC as opposed to being assigned a numerical grade. This is a very unusual, rarely offered, low-grade example of this classic card, providing an extremely desirable, far more affordable alternative to a much more expensive high-grade example. Auction records of this card in high grade exceed $40,000. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,058
