1922 Eastern Exhibit Supply Co. Complete Set (20)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,231

This rare sepia-tone complete set of twenty cards issued by the Eastern Exhibit Supply Company of Philadelphia was designed with postcard-style backs. Cards from this unusual and distinctive Exhibit style set are considerably rarer than the B&W Exhibit cards of the same era. The twenty-card set includes twelve Hall of Famers: Alexander (Ex), Bancroft (Ex-Mt), Cobb (Ex-Mt), E. Collins (Ex-Mt), Faber (Ex-Mt), Heilmann (light water stain in the lower left corner of reverse, otherwise Nr/Mt), Hornsby (Nr/Mt), Johnson (Nr/Mt), Ruth (Vg-Ex/Ex), Schalk (Ex-Mt), Speaker (Ex/Ex-Mt), Wheat (Ex). The remaining eight "commons" all range from Ex to Nr/Mt. This is an outstanding fresh, clean, and crisp set across the board, all with postcard backs unused. The Eastern Exhibit Supply Company was apparently an East Coast affiliate of the well known Exhibit Supply Company of Chicago, as the names and addresses of both companies appear on the reverse of each card. Though these cards are rarely seen today, approximately forty years ago there was a find of two or three hundred Eastern Exhibit Supply Company cards in an old Exhibit card machine, and we suspect that these cards are from that find. This is a very substantial and high-grade early 1920s complete set highlighted by many of the game's true immortals (all the more remarkable in that the set has only twenty cards) including both Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb. Total: 20 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,231
