1923-1924 Exhibits Near-Complete Set (45 of 59)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,998
Near-complete of forty-five cards (of the 59 in the set) from the 1923-1924 Exhibits set, highlighted by five Hall of Famers including Al Simmons and a particularly majestic card of John McGraw. The fourteen cards missing include Ruth and Stengel. The cards technically range from Fr to Vg (with a couple slightly better), averaging Good overall, but have a far more impressive appearance, with many cards downgraded due to reverse notations (in ink or pencil, often just identifying the year as "1925" as is so common with early Exhibits). This set is part of an extraordinary comprehensive Exhibit card collection, assembled over a period of many years by an extremely advanced pioneer collector, that is being offered in a number of smaller lots (mostly by year) in this auction. Keys: Bottomley (Fr), Hartnett (Fr-Gd), McGraw (Vg), Sewell (Gd), and Simmons (two tackholes otherwise Vg-Ex). Even though these cards are technically modest in grade, this is still a very attractive near set (missing only fourteen cards) of these extremely rare Exhibits from the early 1920s. Total: 45 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,998
