1921 Frederick Foto Collection (24)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,525
Collection of twenty-four different 1921 Frederick Foto Service cards, comprised exclusively of players from the Sacramento Senators of the Pacific Coast League. This is an extremely rare set! Frederick Foto Service cards (1-3/4 x 3-11/16 inches) feature black-and-white photos on slick card stock, with the player's name, team, and the company (Frederick Foto) printed in black. Each has a purple ink stamp ("Frederick Foto Service - 718-1/2 Jay Sacramento") on the blank backs (except two have no ink stamp). Issued by the Sacramento-based Frederick Foto photography studio, this rare set is comprised of players from both the Pacific Coast and Major Leagues. The extreme rarity of this issue is obviously a result of its regional distribution. It is unknown exactly how these cards were distributed. The collection is comprised of the following: Compton (bat), Cook (fielding), Elliot, Fittery, Gibson (not checklisted), Hampton (not checklisted), Kopp (bat on shoulder), McGaffigan (bat waist level), McNeely (not checklisted), Mollwitz, Niehaus, Orr (batting), Penner (right foot on ground), Pick, Pierce (batting, not checklisted), Pierce (glove, not checklisted), Prough, Ryan (holding bat, full length), Schang, Shea (not checklisted), Sheehan (bat: since the pose of the Sheehan card listed in the 2011 Standard Catalog is not specified, either this pose or that of the following Sheehan card may be a new discovery), Sheehan (glove), Stanage (batting pose, not checklisted), and Stanage (holding catcher's mask pose, not checklisted). Several of the players in this group went on to play in the Major Leagues. Each Frederck Foto card is very much like a photograph. All are bright and crisp, with outstanding image clarity, and have slight remnants of scrapbook removal on the back (which no doubt is related to their survival in such otherwise extremely high grade). We have long heard of the Frederick Fotos set, and seen them listed in guides, but this is the very first group we have ever seen in person or offered. (The 2011 edition of The Standard Catalog lists sixty-two different. We've never even had a sample!) This is a very attractive and extremely substantial collection of these unusual PCL rarities from the early 1920s. Total: 24 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,525
