1933 V353 World Wide Gum Canadian Goudey Near-Complete Set (78 of 94)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,819

Outstanding and very rarely seen near-complete set of 1933 V353 Canadian Goudeys. This near-complete set of 1933 V353 World Wide Gum includes 78 different of the 94 cards in the set plus an additional 20 variations (backs printed in both English and French), for a total of 98 cards, with highlights including Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx, and many others. Missing just sixteen cards for completion (#1 Bengough, 12, 26, 34, 41, 42 Collins, 49 Frisch, 53, 62, 68, 69 Cochrane, 74 Durocher, 80 Ruth, 83, 91, and 93 Ruth). Very similar to the classic 1933 Goudey set issued in the United States, this is the rare Canadian version issued by Goudey's World Wide Gum. Only 94 cards were issued in the Canadian set, as opposed to 240 cards in the U.S. set. These 98 cards include a very high concentration of Hall of Famers. The twenty-seven Hall of Famers in the set are highlighted by Lou Gehrig (there is only one Gehrig in the V353 set, but two examples of Gehrig in the American Goudeys) and two Jimmy Foxx cards. The V353 World Wide Gum series (commonly referred as “Canadian Goudeys”) is identical in design to their American counterparts on the fronts, but with the text on the backs printed in French and English, or entirely in English, and with the first 52 cards sharing the same card number on the back, while players numbered 53 to 94 have different numbers in the American series. Thirty-three cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA (24 cards) or SGC (9 cards). Keys: #2 Vance (PSA EX-MT 6), 5 Herman (PSA NM 7), two 7 Lyons (English back PSA EX-MT 6 and English/French back PSA EX 5), 19 Dickey (SGC VG/EX 50), 20 Terry (SGC EX 60), 22 Traynor (PSA EX 5), two 23 Cuyler (English back Pr and English/French back PSA EX-MT 6), 25 P. Waner (SGC VG/EX 50), 29 Foxx (PSA VG-EX 4), 31 Lazzeri (SGC FAIR 20), two 35 Simmons (English back SGC VG/EX 50 and English/French back PSA EX 5), 44 Bottomley (Vg-Ex), 47 Manush (SGC EX 60), two 54 Faber (English back PSA EX-MT 6 and English/French back PSA VG-EX 4), 55 Lou Gehrig (PSA VG-EX 4) , two 60 Hoyt (English back SGC VG/EX 50 and English/French back Gd), 63 Cronin (PSA NM 7), two 64 Grimes (English back SGC VG/EX 50 and English/French back PSA EX 5), 84 Berg (PSA EX-MT 6), 85 Foxx (SGC GOOD 30), 89 Sewell (PSA VG-EX 4), and two 90 L. Waner (English back PSA NM 7; and English/French back trimmed along the top, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex). The other PSA graded cards from the set consist of #4 (NM 7), 8 (EX-MT 6), 9 (EX-MT 6), 15 (EX-MT 6), 24 (EX 5), 59 (EX-MT 6), 61 (EX 5), and 65 (EX-MT 6). The balance of the cards grade as follows: 70% range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex), and 30% range from Gd to Vg (with a few slightly lesser). The V353 World Wide Gum set represents a fascinating variation to the classic 1933 Goudey set, and cards from this set are considerably rarer than their American Goudey counterparts. This is an exceptionally attractive near-complete set (missing sixteen cards) of this rare, unusual, and very substantial 1930s Canadian Goudey issue. Total: 98 cards (78 different plus 20 variations). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,819
